Cinnamon Sugar Apple Chips

We are so lucky to live in the house we live in. Not only is it a beautiful house but there are tons of fruit trees in our backyard including an apple tree. Most people are accustomed to apples in the fall but in Arizona our apple tree is in full bloom in the summer. So the question is what do I do with all these apples? We can’t eat all of them at once so I have to find creative ways to preserve and store the apples. One of my favorite methods is apple chips. They are crunchy and sweet, great for a quick snack. And my kids love to help me make them.

Here is what you need:

-apples

-a large bowl of water with a few squirts of lemon juice

-apple slicer (optional)

-cinnamon sugar mixture (I made mine using 1 cup of sugar to 1 TBLS cinnamon)

-dehydrator (found mine at a garage sale for $5)

Begin by peeling the apples and slicing them very thin. This is where the apple slicer is great because it peels, cores, and slices the apples all at once.

Put your apple slices into the water with lemon juice. This will keep the apples from going brown.

Once you have done a few apples lay them on a tray of your dehydrator; make sure there is no overlapping.

Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar.

Repeat with the remaining apples until your whole dehydrator is full or until you run out of apples.

Turn on the dehydrator and let dry for at least 24 hours. I put mine outside in the sun and let dry for 48 hours. This ensures that they are nice and crispy.  Then eat them!
